What is Gram Negative Bacteria?

Gram negative bacteria are characterized as having a thin peptidoglycan layer in their cell walls. They have an outer membrane composed of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), along with an inner membrane which is not present in gram positive bacteria. As a result of their outer membrane, Gram negative bacteria are more resistant to certain antibiotics.

Gram Negative Bacteria Taxonomy

The taxonomy of gram negative bacteria is complex and also quite diverse, due to the vast number of species that are within this group. The classification of gram negative bacteria can be described at various levels. The majority of gram negative bacteria fall under the phylum Proteobacteria.

Examples of gram negative bacteria include E. coli, Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
