Schizotypal personality disorder presents with aloof and apathetic behavior. Although their behavior is odd and eccentric, they do not escalate to the extremes found in people diagnosed with schizophrenia (refer to the Picmonic on "Schizophrenia Assessment"). They are socially awkward and mistrustful of others. Common personality traits include eccentricity, magical thinking, suspicion, and detachment of others.

People with schizotypal personality disorder demonstrate socially awkward behavior. They respond inappropriately to social cues and fail to adhere to social norms. Their appearance and communication style are considered eccentric, and they are able to maintain few, if any, close relationships.


Since individuals with schizotypal personality disorder are mistrustful of others, they maintain few, if any, personal relationships. They misinterpret the motivations and behaviors of others and gradually develop mistrust. They constantly doubt the loyalty of others and fail to trust.

People with schizotypal personality disorder are eccentric and generally unable to understand how their behavior affects others. Stress may cause them to develop psychotic symptoms characterized by brief periods of delusional thoughts and hallucinations. They tend to have an inappropriate affect such as laughing at sad situations.

People with schizotypal personality disorder maintain peculiar beliefs and engage in magical thinking. They engage in ideas or reference, illusions, and depersonalization as the detach themselves from the rest of society. These individuals can be made aware of their misinterpretations of reality, unlike persons with schizophrenia.

They tend to have bizarre thoughts and speech patterns. They are superstitious and believe that certain people have special powers, such as telepathy. Since they are unable to logically orient their thoughts, they tend to ramble and go on tangents from the original topic being discussed. The inability to maintain appropriate conversation contributes to their detachment from others.


Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder tend to be suspicious of others. They conjure paranoid ideas and are hypersensitive to the behaviors of others.


Since they are highly suspicious, People with schizotypal personality disorder tend to be detached from others and prefer to be alone. They avoid social situations and prefer to talk or gesture to themselves.
