Bupropion

Picmonic
Bupropion is a frequently prescribed atypical antidepressant drug which can also be used for smoking cessation. Commonly, this drug is combined with an SSRI for depression therapy. The mechanism of action for this drug is not entirely understood, but yields increased availability of dopamine and norepinephrine. It is proposed that this drug leads to smoking cessation by blocking nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. Side effects of this medication include stimulant side effects, such as insomnia and tachycardia. Seizure is another side effect of Bupropion, as this drug lowers the seizure threshold.
