DOWNLOAD PDFThis medication is indicated for chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. It can cause shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet.
Sacubitril is a Neprilysin inhibitor drug that prevents the breakdown of the hormone natriuretic peptide (NP). Natriuretic peptides are secreted by the heart in response to an increase in blood volume or blood pressure. They work to reduce blood pressure by causing the kidneys to excrete sodium and water. This helps to decrease the volume of blood, which reduces blood pressure.
Sacubitril is combined with valsartan and marketed under the brand name called Entresto. Sacubitril is a Neprilysin inhibiting drug that prevents the breakdown of the hormone natriuretic peptide (NP). Normally, NP decreases blood pressure (BP) by getting rid of excess water and salt through the urine. Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that blocks the action of angiotensin II. Typically, angiotensin II increases BP through its functions as a potent vasoconstrictor, stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete aldosterone, and increases sodium and water retention by the kidneys. When sacubitril and valsartan are used together, they can lower blood pressure more than either drug alone.
A side effect associated with Sacubitril is hypotension. Hypotension is a medical condition in which blood pressure falls too low. This may cause dizziness, fainting, or headache.
A side effect associated with Sacubitril is hyperkalemia. Symptoms of hyperkalemia may include muscle weakness, tingling sensations, and a slow or irregular heartbeat.
Cough is a side effect associated with Sacubitril.
A side effect associated with Sacubitril is dizziness. Patients should be warned not to operate heavy machineries while taking this drug.
Sacubitril must not be taken with ACE inhibitors. When used together, the two medications can increase the risk of angioedema.
