Visual Field Defects - Homonymous Hemianopia

Defective Visual Field with Same-sided Half-nope-eyes (with Half a Home)
Picmonic
Homonymous Hemianopia is a partial loss of vision in one half of each eye. The same half of the visual field is lost in both eyes. A lesion of the optic tract in the parietal (occipital) lobe causes the contralateral halves of the visual fields to be lost in each eye.
4 KEY FACTS
VISUAL FIELD ABNORMALITY
Homonymous Hemianopia
Same-sided Half-nope-eyes

This consists of a partial loss of vision in both eyes.

Vision Loss - Both Eyes Same Side
Both Eyes Darkened on the Same Side

One half of the visual field is lost in each eye, and it is the same half for both eyes.

LOCATION OF LESION
Optic Tract
Eye Track

A lesion of the optic tract on one side leads to the contralateral halves of both eyes losing vision. For example, a lesion of the right optic tract would cause the left half of the visual fields in both eyes to be lost.

Lesion of the optic radiation, which carries information to the visual cortex, may also lead to homonymous hemianopia if both the temporal portion, aka Meyer’s loop, and parietal portion of the radiation are lesioned.
