A person affected by personality trait disorder may have difficulty identifying who they are as an individual or what their role is in society. These patients may also experience difficulty with independence or directing oneself.

Patients with a personality disorder may display a lack of empathy for others, in addition to having difficulty keeping or creating intimate relationships.

A person must have one or more of the following personality traits in order to be diagnosed with a personality disorder.

An individual with a personality trait disorder may view the world in a negative light. These individuals may also frequently express feelings of anger, disrespect, disgust, and fear. This is referred to as negative affectivity.

A person who chooses to remain emotionally uninvolved in various personal and social situations is considered to be detached. Detachment is an active decision and is not related to difficulty or inability to form emotional connections.

Characteristics of antagonistic behavior include manipulation, deceitfulness, and hostility.

Disinhibition is characterized by risk taking, and irresponsible or impulsive behavior. Individuals with compulsive behavior; however, feel an irresistible urge to do something. Compulsive actions are typically persistent and repetitive.

Psychoticism refers to a pattern of aggressive and hostile behavior.
