Thrombocytopenia is the term for patients with lower than normal platelet counts, while thrombocytosis refers to those with higher than normal levels. Monitoring platelet levels can indicate how well a patient’s blood can clot. In a scenario of low platelets or thrombocytopenia, patients experience bleeding, bruising, or petechiae. In high platelet levels or thrombocythemia, patients are predisposed to clot formation.
