Platelets are part of the blood that bind together to promote clot formation. Monitoring platelet levels will help determine how well a patient can clot if trauma occurs. Medications and certain diseases can affect platelet levels. Because of this, platelet levels can be used as a diagnostic tool for certain diseases or medications that affect platelet levels, such as cancer, leukemia, chemotherapy, autoimmune disease, or thrombocythemia. The normal range is 150,000 to 400,000 platelets per microliter (uL).

The normal range for platelets is between 150,000 and 400,000 platelets per microliter (uL). Thrombocytopenia is the term for patients with lower than normal platelet counts, while thrombocytosis refers to those with higher than normal levels. Monitoring platelet levels can indicate how well a patient’s blood can clot. In a scenario of low platelets or thrombocytopenia, patients experience bleeding, bruising, or petechiae. In high platelet levels or thrombocythemia, patients are predisposed to clot formation.
