Doing Business in Dubai

When doing business in Dubai, there are several cultural differences that you should be considerate of, and you can use this Picmonic to remember them. For example, it&rsquo;s important to know that English is widely used in the business world but a polite phrase or two in Arabic is considered good manners. This is shown literally in our Picmonic with the businessman greeting an Emirati business associate in both English and Arabic. A good phrase to learn is &ldquo;As-salamu alaikum,&rdquo; which translates to &ldquo;peace be upon you.&rdquo; This is often answered with the phrase &ldquo;Wa Alaikum Salaam,&rdquo; meaning &ldquo;And unto you peace&rdquo;. Also keep in mind that most Emirati&nbsp;businesses are family run and you may be required to meet junior members of the firm to build relationships before meeting the real decision maker. Much like how our main character meets with the younger Emirati business man before going up the elevator to meet the senior decision maker. Once conducting an Emirati business meeting, there are a few things to consider. The first beginning that punctuality is not highly valued in Dubai. And this is shown in this Picmonic as our guy tossing his watch out of the window. So don&rsquo;t take offence if your meeting date is a little bit late. The same goes for disruptions. Meetings may be disrupted by phone calls or personal matters without stigma. And you can remember this by the phone disrupting the decision maker. Chaz the businessman has just arrived in Dubai and is looking to make some successful business deals with a well known Emirati company. When he approaches the beautiful Burj Khalifa tower, he first greets an Emirati businessman in English but then he uses some Arabic phrases for good manners. &ldquo;As-salamu alaikum&rdquo; he says meaning &ldquo;peace be upon you&rdquo; to which the associate responds &ldquo;Wa Alaikum Salaam&rdquo; which means &nbsp;&ldquo;and unto you peace&rdquo;. He&rsquo;s an young Emirati man that is the junior of this family run business. Chaz must meet with him before meeting the main decision maker up stairs. But once he&rsquo;s up there he realizes he&rsquo;s late. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s ok,&rdquo; said the decision maker, &ldquo;toss that watch out the window&rdquo;. Chaz gratefully abides. But then his meeting date gets&nbsp;distracted by his phone. At first he thought &ldquo;how rude&rdquo; but then quickly discovers that this is ok in Dubai. Some matters are just more important than business. So the two start off the meeting with a delicious Non-alcoholic Drink. Which paired well with their meal as they discussed their deals. By the end of the meeting both were satisfied and came to an verbal agreement. Even their speech-bubbles shook hands, thus making Chaz&rsquo;s first business trip to Dubai a success. Way to go Chaz, way to go. &nbsp;
