Or just skim the transcript below and try our handy nursing visual mnemonic study tool, the Obstetrics-related Picmonic for \u201cTORCH Screening\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ih6VQQCgz0g?list=PLdyBDgLevMR4sVwy3NeIFURV-gy2iJ0n-\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Today we are highlighting the TORCH infections.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>TORCH infections are&nbsp;<\/span>the group of diseases that cause congenital conditions if the fetus is exposed to them in the uterus.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These infections are often confusing, so we\u2019ll go over them one by one so you understand them clearly!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The acronym TORCH stands for:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong> Toxoplasmosis<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> Other<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> Rubella<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> Cytomegalovirus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> Herpes simplex<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what is Toxoplasmosis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxoplasmosis is a disease that is caused by the toxoplasma gondii parasite, a protozoan parasite that is very common and often found in cat feces. There are baby intrauterine growth retardations, which means poor growth of a fetus while in the mother\u2019s womb during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another one is hepatosplenomegaly, meaning the enlargement of the liver and spleen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.picmonic.com\/pages\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/liver-and-spleen-balloons.png_1625_22_6.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"403\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deafness and chorioretinitis, or the inflammation of the choroid and retina of the eye, is also common.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"197\" height=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.picmonic.com\/pages\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/deafness.png\" alt=\"chorioretinitis\" class=\"wp-image-8089\" title=\"TORCH Infections\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms are hydrocephalus, or the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, as well as scattered calcifications in the white matter, basal ganglia and cortex of the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, you can see why it is SUPER important that this is screened for with the other TORCH infections.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, of course, when getting the mother\u2019s health history, definitely be sure to consider if the mother has a cat or would be
