Until the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmle.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new scoring system takes place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January 2022, there will still be a numeric score for Step 1 (and the numeric score will remain for Step 2) that will factor into residency \u201cmatch\u201d decisions.&nbsp; For most medical students, simply passing the USMLE Step 1 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t good enough<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have any hopes of going into a competitive specialty or the field of your choice, then you need to pass the USMLE Step 1 with flying colors. <\/span><b>The first time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmle.org\/bulletin-information\/eligibility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t retake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the step component to simply improve your score.
