Seeing the leadership and dedication of educators around the world was inspiring during a time when we all needed inspiration.&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now that the rapid transition to distance education learning models has passed, we are looking at what happens next. How will educators ensure that all students have equal access to a learning environment that will help&nbsp; them achieve their learning potential?&nbsp; This includes equal access to the distance learning resources, classroom materials, lectures and information regardless of abilities, learning styles and technology access.<\/span>\n<h2><b>Striving for UDL (Universal Design for Learning)<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While UDL is not specifically mandated, its principles have been referenced and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recognized in recent legislation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a way of broadening access to education for all learners. The broader mandate of UDL moves us beyond the specific requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and includes support for anyone who presents a need for accommodation to ensure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equal access to information required for learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as described by the IT department at the University of Tennessee.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDL includes students who have learning preferences and needs that differ from those of the traditional learner.&nbsp; The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDL approach to instruction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cincludes three principles: (a) multiple means of engagement, (b) multiple means of representation, and (c) multiple means of action and expression.\u201d In their article<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1201588.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cApplying the Principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the College Classroom\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, authors Boothe, Lohmann, Donnell and Hall describe a few ways that educators are incorporating UDL strategies in their teaching to ensure that all students have an equal access to information and the opportunity to learn:<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<table width=\"650\" height=\"377\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Engagement Strategies<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Representation Strategies<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Expression Strategies<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessible technology&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster collaboration<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative content sources<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scaffold<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be easily accessible<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessible technology <\/span>\n\nMultiple formats\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlight critical information<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simple navigation<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Course syllabus<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide feedback<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessible technology&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarify assignments<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion boards&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide choices&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summative assessments&nbsp;<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/span>\n<h2><b>\u201cProvide Multiple Means of Representation\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to make sure all students can access the materials, UDL guidelines recommend that curriculum provides alternatives to text, audio and visual information. This includes accommodation for ADA compliance.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For ADA compliance, a person with a disability is able to engage in their education and gain the same information and services as a person without a disability. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/504faq.html?exp=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADA Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires that an individual has equal access to materials and teaching, including online instruction, so all courses need to be compliant from day one of instruction.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For vision and hearing-impaired students, the delivery method needs to have screen-reader or captioning (or both) capabilities. Giving the option to see, hear and read materials is critical to being universally accepted and meeting the needs of all students.&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few best practices to successfully meet these needs include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Record lectures and presentations with information for students to review later<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include audio podcast recordings of visual presentations<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write hyperlinks into text within a sentence to lend support for those with screen readers<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include alt tag or alt text with images and graphics \u2013 most LMS (learning management systems) already offer this option when you include an image or graphic<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorporate videos that have with closed-captioning as well as clear audio<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefit of ADA compliance is that UDL guidelines\u2019 recommendation to \u201cprovide multiple means of representation\u201d will be met for a broader group of students. This includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/representation\/perception\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checkpoints for broadening options for \u201cperception\u201d:<\/span><\/a>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer ways of customizing the display of information<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer alternatives for auditory information<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer alternatives for visual information<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<h2><b>Picmonic Supports Education Equity<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Picmonic can also help ensure your curriculum is consistently UDL accessible.
